Land's End?

Is it because I am a mom? Is it my deep love of plaid? Am I older than I think? Or is this raincoat really cool? Because I seriously love it.

The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades

The Crew Chief, $113

The Sportsman, $99 - (great on dudes)

The Aviator, $99

Maintenance Kit, free with each pair

This just in. Randolph Engineering sunglasses - supplier of sunglasses for the US Military, Air Force and NASA -and now to the gentlefolk of Williamsburg. When I was placing my order and asking my sales rep, Rick, about different styles, he made sure to tell me which styles astronauts preferred. (The Crew Chief, as well as a few other sportier numbers I didn't select.)

Turns out that pilots and astronauts prefer small sunglasses, to wear under their helmets, so these are nice and small - great for women. (They also come in bigger sizes.)

Randolph Engineering products are famed for their quality and durability. Each pair of our sunglasses goes through more than 200 production stages – mostly by hand. We even make our own solder flux. As a result, our frames provide unequaled strength and solder joint integrity.

We feel so strongly about the quality of our products that we will repair or replace any broken solder joint for the lifetime of the frame (assuming normal use). That is one of the many reasons we call ourselves “serious equipment”.

I love when people take their work seriously. Man oh man oh MAN am I chuffed to have gotten these babies in.

(One more thing. If you are the person who says "I don't want to spend money on sunglasses because I always lose them.", let me enlighten (!) you a teensy bit. As it turns out, when you buy serious sunglasses, you generally DON'T lose them. Take it from me: loser of many, many St. Mark's street jobbies and holder-on to one pair of REs for years.)

Yes Sir, that's my Baby (who I don't know that well, but feel compelled to gift to, anyway)

good luck horseshoes, $8
bird boxes, $19

'Tis the season for weddings and babies and graduations and showers and weekends at glamorous country manses.  Alright, probably patio barbecues is more accurate, but accuracy is so pedestrian.  These perfect little horseshoes and bird boxes are back in stock and make a  thoughtful wee little gift for the co-worker you don't know too, too well, or her son who's graduating from high school and heading off to Broooown.

All little boys and girls know Mr. Catbird

My pen pal, Katie, is a magical photographer, I'm sure, the most inspiring of mothers. She is also a patient pen pal who forgives this wayward stationer for having trouble putting pen to paper. Katie is a treasure-snuffler; I feel sure that walking down the road with her constantly reveals truffles, such as this story of Mr. Catbird.

The Magic Garden

mercury glass mushrooms, $28

We sold out of the very practical, best wine glasses ever, but we still have the lovely, wacky, and purely pleasurable mercury glass mushrooms in stock.  They remind me of mini, bright and shiny versions of the mushrooms that Carole and Paula sat on.  Remember Carole and Paula???

Bunting

fAvorite design bunting, 11', $15

Such a noble title for such a humble beast.  Festoon (ah- another great word!) a pompom bunting here, there, or preferably, everywhere.

upward mobility.

mobiles, $66

Look at these intricate mobiles we just got in. They would be so beautiful over a crib, or hanging over a little table in any room. I heart them.

Soon they will be available on our new website, along with TONS of other stuff.

April, today you are not cruel even slightly

I'm working at the store today, door flung open, Louis Armstrong trumpeting, Kobo Sparkling Rose burning (oh, how I love a good rose- $34 and my ENTIRE apartment smells like a Redoute drawing.)  If I were not heading out of town this weekend, I would be spending tomorrow taking in the cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  Look at this tree-by-tree map of the blooming process!  Bloomin' brilliant.

Mowgli.

There is little that is more boring and annoying to me than hearing how busy people are. But I am SO busy! I've been working on the new website which will go live in a few weeks. Oh poor me.

On another note, look at these pictures of Tippi Degré, daughter of French filmmakers and wildlife photographers. I may need to get this book for some non-bourgeois parenting tips.

A juggernaut under the Manhattan Bridge

The exponential growth of Etsy is awe-inspiring to me- let's just call it the United States of Etsy.  Rony's set up a page with some of our house line, not to be confused with house wine, though I am enthusiastic about both.  We welcome all Etsy-ites and salute your handmade flag.

Crumbling ladder tears don't fall/They shine down your shoulders

The title of this entry is taken from one of my very favorite song lyrics.  I used to own a very junky pair of earrings that almost perfectly evoked this image, but Miss Vera Meat has just taken it to a whole new stratosphere with her ladder necklace, shown here in silver for $90, but don't you just know that the 14k gold version is calling my name, to the tune of $600 that I sadly cannot sing.  A sidenote: I just love that Vera is donating half the proceeds from this necklace to Jack Ladder's new album.  She's always building community, that one.

Put a Lid on it

urchin boxes -  $30

I'm in the midst of full on party preparation, which sometimes for me means getting somewhat myopic- is my underwear drawer organized?  is my silver polished?  I am pretty sure that neither of these will ensure a party of epic proportions,  but that's the way it goes.  I am also pretty sure that moments before my guests arrive, I will be forever grateful to these little urchin boxes for being the repository of those little homeless items that plague us all.

Americans in Paris

We love Jessica Grindstaff prize ribbons and we love The Selby. In the event that this neon taxidermy mouse ribbon that Jessica created for the Selby show at Colette is slightly tres chere at 400 euro, I suggest that you peruse our selection of Grindstaff, which falls nicely between $48 for a mini and ranges to $130 for a giganto.

Brazil nuts.

According to our resident Brazilian catbird, the venerable and eagle-eyed Clarissa Steed, we had an unbelievable amount of Brazilians at the store this weekend. And while we are used to our fair share of tourists from all over, this seemed very site-specific. Turns out catbird was featured in Marie Claire Brazil, alongside The Shake Shack! I could not be more honored. Or more in need of a peanut butter milk shake.

(Our Brazilian friends may need to get look in to some fact checkers. Oznot's Dish closed forever ago.)

Skip to my lou, my dumpling

photo frm Flickr

The Catbird girls are already devotees of the Endless Summer Taco Truck, but my heart did skip a beat when I spied the Rickshaw Dumpling Truck parked in front of our neighbor, Amarcord, last night. Thank you Rickshaw- you're going to make this spring real grand.

Clearly, my peeps.

And speaking of clear glass vessels, Whiskie Bits Bakeshop in Oakland, CA not only has some of the most amazing flavors you could ever dream of, they clearly have superb taste in glassware.

A vase is not a vase is not a vase

tulipiere vase, $32
gem vase, $12

or, not all vessels are created equal. Certainly, both of these photos could profit from some styling courtesy of our favorite blogging-florist, Sarah of Saipua. If you take one of these home with you, I suggest you run straight to my new favorite spot, Rose Red and Lavender, and let the lovely crew there pick some blooms out for you.

For a very 21st century girl

the bolero, $236

Louise Brooks, silent film star, Bliss Lau girl

The thing that surprises me about the Bliss Lau pieces we got in the store recently, is how gosh-darned wearable they are.  They look amazing on every girl who has tried them on, and way...softer than I would've guessed.  My first reaction was that I'm no where near tough enough to wear one (what with my love of lace and florals), but I do believe I was...wrong.  They possess a certain unexpected ease, and who doesn't have a drawer full of tanks and a stack of denim just waiting to be draped with chains.

Note to Bliss:  Look at Louise!   What about a sparkly, shiny collection for us magpies?!

things i love.

Chipped paint, chunky cats, peter pan collars, blue dresses, saddle shoes, tiger PJs, kids with nice tans and Superbombas photo collection.

Make sure to read her great interview too.
