Stories from the Shop

Here at the shop, we all squealed when the Catbird Ballerina Collection hit the shelves. A few of us might have even tried some pieces on and twirled around the store a few times. But when a couple of real life Russian ballerinas came into the shop to scoop up their own Ballerina Earrings, it was my heart that did the twirling. Dreams do come true.

Leon's Burger Hut

I've admired this sign in our neighborhood for years. So great, right?

Shari Lind called.

So. Shari Lind called the store today. She told us she was misquoted in The Times and was kidding about Dunkin' Donuts and Food Emporium, etc. Shari, that really sucks. I have been misquoted, (never so grossly - but I recall Lucky quoting me as saying something was "totally rock n' roll", which I would never say). It's a horrible feeling - I'm so sorry for contributing to it. Thanks for letting us know.
(Seriously though, I could use a Bank of America.)

Really Shari Lind?? REALLY?

Please note: Shari Lind called and told us she'd been misquoted. See here.
"Shari Lind, who maneuvered a baby stroller occupied by her son Sawyer out the doors of Duane Reade, said she was elated by the chain’s presence. “Please, can you bring in Dunkin’ Donuts too,” she said. “I also want a Bank of America.”
A newcomer to Williamsburg from Manhattan, Ms. Lind said she found the neighborhood to be very inconvenient. Many of the chic stores refuse to take credit cards. And, she said, the quaint gourmet coffee shops charge too much. She said she sent an e-mail to Food Emporium imploring the company to open a supermarket in Williamsburg."
From today's NY Times. This article made me SEETHE. Also of note: some Duane Readers came by with a Welcome Us to the Hood gift basket for us Catbirders, which we politely declined.
Btw, Rachel Parker of North Side Pharmacy, quoted in the above article, is the worlds greatest multi-lingual (English, Polish and Spanish) pharmacist who I have seen bend over backwards to help customers, including myself, in a pinch. Shari Lind, I am sure the Extremely Convenient UWS is mourning your loss. I suggest a hasty retreat before the locals get their pitchforks.

Our front gate.

Take that, stupid graffiti-er!

*Thanks Joanie!!

A strange monk.

This cloaked fellow came in. He had a heart with a crown of thorns embroidered onto said cloak, resembling many tattoos we see at the shop. We could make neither heads nor tails of him.

Radish

Yeah, so I'll come clean. I haven't actually been to Radish. But, Anne's been, and I stuck my fork in her food, and it was delicious. Their menu looks like perfection- I've got my eye on the picnic lunch for two. You and me? Okay.

Dear fellas, word on the street is that a certain day near approaching is a popular day to ask your old ladies to get hitched. Have you shelled out all your clams at Main Drag Music or at Clem's?  Or do you just intend to wait til February 13th to think about a ring?  Either which way, Team Catbird is on your side.  We'll figure out a quick fix in a pinch.

It feels pretty darned great to get the above photo, titled "it's_true_all_the_coolest

_girls_shop_catbird.jpg", from a really special customer.  But really, we're only "cool" cause of you.  We've got amazing customers in our real life little shop on Bedford Avenue, and now we've got all of you in this intergalactic world, too.  Gosh, this internet thing is grand.

Wonder City!

IMG_1643heart and arrow necklace by Bittersweets, $325

We love that our new website is approximately a trillion times larger than our last one, but there are still some things that just reside in our little store.  This 14k rose and yellow gold necklace by Bittersweets is one of them.  Come visit and we'll show you around our cases and recommend our favorite brunch spots.   There's a lot to do in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York: we pinky swear promise you'll be happy you came.

This style maven visited our fair burg and seems to have had a nice time. It really is an amazing place (despite the occasional ridiculousness). She had some kind words to say about us as well.

For example: Two Weeks

LFG card

The penultimate way for any Williamsburg lady to let her old man know they're going from 2 to 3.

Guy Trebay argued in his NY Times article
this weekend that the male potbellies widely spotted "in the vicinity of the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene, the McCarren Park Greenmarket and pretty much any place one is apt to encounter fans of Grizzly Bear" could be partially blamed on contrarian natures rebelling against having a toned and taut President. Mr. Trebay, that's just silly. If you spent your mornings at Roebling Tea Room and your evenings at Marlow & Sons, you too would have a most deliciously acquired potbelly.

"I was living in this place before there was even a coffee shop"

My old friend, Tom, made this hilarious, snappy short, "Hipster Job." Job, as in the Bible. Tom's always had a soft spot for some Biblical humor.

21st century ice cream man

A delicious and dangerous development: The Van Leeuwen ice cream truck has been hanging out in front of our store recently. I love that both the Van Leeuwen truck and the Endless Summer taco truck are owned by 20 somethings. Though I have left that particular decade behind, it was also the decade in which I began I started my business.

bicycle love.

This cute couple was parked outside the store last week.

Their action seemed to have caused Yellow Rose to perspire some.

Skip to my lou, my dumpling

The Catbird girls are already devotees of the Endless Summer Taco Truck, but my heart did skip a beat when I spied the Rickshaw Dumpling Truck parked in front of our neighbor, Amarcord, last night. Thank you Rickshaw- you're going to make this spring real grand.

mais OUI!

Last week I spent the day interviewing people for a weekend post at the store. I met lots of lovelies, one of whom was very French, had great, easy style (is that redundant?) and was wearing a beautiful necklace that she had made that stopped me in my tracks. I picked some up immediately and today she told me that a Very Big Designer (who shall remain nameless) is probably picking them up as well. (There are people who walk this earth and the sun shines on their shoulders no matter where they go. I think Judith may be one of these gilded lilies walking amongst us. She has been in the states for about 15 minutes and seems to have all her canards in a perfect row.)

They are at catbird now and they are so great! Long chains, cool round pendants hand made from vintage French fabrics, each one is different, and all are under $100. (I guarantee they will be much much more at...the other store, which still will remain nameless.)

(Note from later: we sold one within minutes of putting them out.)

more sweet than bitter.

Robin Adams, the creative genius behind Bittersweets New York, has come up with a great idea.

We sell her adorable engraved rings rather briskly, and, while they are a great gift, sometimes you just don't know exactly what size and letters your beloved may want. So, here is the solution. A catbird/bittersweets gift card. Designed exquisitely (as always) by Robin. So there you go. Problem solved.

(Whenever I use stamps it looks like the work of a 7th grader who just discovered Kate's Paperie. Hmmph.)
