#1 Day-dream believer

Grindstaff prize ribbons, $48-$130

While I never rode horses, or was a member of 4-H, I have long-coveted the trappings of such pursuits. Pin one of Grindstaff's handmade rosettes on your lapel, and make like the champion you are. Champion of what? The sky is the limit. #1 night-swimmer, scotch-drinker, thrift-shopper...

lord, i was born a gamblin' gal.

dice in horn box $16, dominoes in wood box $48

Poker is fine and all (and I seriously lurvs me some poker) but, unlike Dice and Dominoes, it take some preparation. It's not what you'd safely call a spur-of-the-moment game. And speaking of spurs, do you sometimes fancy yourself a modern-day wrangler? Well, what the heck are you doing without your own set of dice or dominoes!?

If you want to be the life of the party, even if that party is three people, carry some dice and learn how to play the insanely addictive Cee-lo. Then proceed to take all your friends' money. Also insanely addictive.

The oldest known set of dominoes was found in Tutankhamun's tomb and dated 1355 B.C! King Tut, how'd you get so funky? Was it all that Domino playing?

March of the Round-Bottomed Wooden Soldiers.

wooden tops, $14

One of these wooden tops is going to come home with me and be drafted into paperweight service. Or, use them for their intended purpose and teach your wee ones about Whirling Dervishes as they dance about - all toys ought to do double duty as learning tools, no?

feedbag.

The purchase of one of these (reversible, practical and awesome) totes feeds one child for one school year. Plain and simple. They have already helped over 40,000 kids. You can do your part by buying one today at catbird. The organization is truly amazing and worth reading about.

There are two styles: FEED 1, ($65), shown above, feeds one kid for a school year. FEED 2, ($95), has messenger straps and feeds two kids for a school year. And happily, the aesthetic is extremely appealing, especially for all you M*A*S*H fans.

From the FEED site:
When boys and girls are given a free, nutritious meal in school, research has shown that attendance increases by 100% and performance improves greatly. Girls with just a few years of education have fewer children, have them later in life, and are better prepared to care for and educate them. For many children, a school lunch is the only meal they will receive all day. Learn more: www.wfp.org.

good fences, made out of chocolate, make good neighbors.

I saw this chocolate, wrapped in lovely paper, at The Brooklyn Flea in November and wanted to carry it, if for no other reason than we would all have delicious snacks whenever we had some down time. Plus everyone knows that nothing goes better with chocolate than jewelry. (Smartly, they were already at the very lovely Bedford Cheese Shop, so no go for me.)

This morning, reading our esteemed local paper, I was pleased to discover that these fine gentlemen are catbird's neighbors.

A bipartisan house

Cape Cod polishing cloths, $5.50

Just like I always thought I was exclusively a cat person until I got Teepee, I always thought I was a tarnish person until we got these Cape Cod polishing cloths in the store. It feels real nice to embrace all: cat, dog, dull, shine.

banner day.

Made by the same, super nice Dutch folk that brought you this gem, are these super long (38 feet!), cotton banners. They are great as a party decoration (outside or in), decorating a room (kid's or not), or just to brighten up an space (an entry way, an office, a kitchen...). And at $38 they are a great gift as well.

(Have you noticed that Dutch people are so nice? They really are. So, to bring the point home, five percent of the profits from this nice Dutch company go to UNICEF projects.)

A ring to build a dream upon

Barens and Belle 14k and tourmaline, white sapphire, and chrysoprase rings, $120-$130

One of my most treasured possessions is my grandmother's add a pearl necklace- a tradition in which girls were gifted pearls on special occasions until a necklace was born. Stacking rings seem like a fresh, modern take on the sentiment, as they are the perfect present to oneself at landmark moments.

I could while away the hours/conferrin' with the flowers/consultin' with the rain

one of a slew of sweet, unisex onesies, $24

This is better than any crazy daydream I am prone to having, involving animals and props. I would very much enjoy whistlin' my way down Bedford Avenue, protected from a sun shower by a wee little clover umbrella.

The Center for Over-Sharing

I linked this blog to my Notes in Facebook and...well...I'm really not sure what that means. Does anyone know? Do people get an email every time we post? Is it annoying? It sounds annoying. Anyone? Please don't be shy.

My dear and unfortunate successor,

Word on the street is that vampire-themed entertainment is all the rage. I can't comment much on the Twilight phenomenon, except for the fact that in book form, it seems to be gripped in many a hand on the subway. I say skip it, and read the The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I'll see you in a few days, when you swing by to pick up Ach Ach Liebling's Anti-Vamp Protection Kit necklace. At $70, it's probably not a bad investment, because you just never know.

Letting time pass

(last photo from absolutely beautiful things)

I have big plans for tomorrow. Morning: light Seda France French Tulip candle ($29), coffee, turkish breakfast, read the NYT website. Afternoon: more coffee, read last issue of Domino, plan dinner menu in my new, bordello meets New Wave French Notebook ($3.95). Evening: wine, cook dinner menu planned in new notebook, re-light French Tulip candle to help chase away the smells of cooking. There's near 'bout nothing nicer than granting oneself permission to meander a day away.

Our house is a very, very white house

$38, now at Catbird

We giggled with glee when we discovered these pop-up cardboard dollhouses- so perfect for the lollipop guild to scribble upon! Rony's last post has me thinking, though, that this could be an unexpected canvas to tell your dear someone exactly what you're dreaming of. Let Rob Ryan be your guide on your grown-up diorama making, pre-Valentine's day ride...

my funny, and not expensive, valentine.

Dear Dudes,
You don't have to break the bank, or get super girly, to get a thoughtful Valentine's Day present. As long as it's thoughtful, it's a good gift. Period. It doesn't have to involve hearts and roses, although hearts and roses can be quite nice. Some ideas:

heart in hand bottle opener ($12)

an old-timey hanky ($4 / 5 for $20)

john derian plates (the three shown here are $88 and under)

an old-timey card, equipped with a hanky ($4)

Jewelry is always nice. St. Kilda pieces are consistent winners, as are Yayoi Forest heart necklaces. Check out that cute little frog with black diamond eyes!
(pieces shown here start at $100)

Terrariums and little vases ($28 - $90)

teeny heart studs (singles are $28 for silver, $40 for gold)

Or really, seriously, just get a card and write something heartfelt and true on it. Anyone worth their salt will love that the most anyway. (under $4)

In the jingle jangle morning

For a slightly gentler take on Nancy Cunard's armload of bangles, I point you in the direction of Mela's one of a kind, jingly-janglies. Mel uses vintage wood bangles as her base and wraps them in mostly vintage silks. As a girl who wears mostly black though has an intense love of florals, I plan on stacking two mismatching babies on one arm, and one on the other. If I were more conversant in fashion, I might tell you that the bangles are Dries with a twist of Prada. But I'm not, so I won't. I will tell you that at $18-$22 Mela bangles are fool's gold.

das boots.

You know when you wear your boots all winter and then spring starts to peek around the corner and you have no idea what else you could possibly wear? (If you have Svens then you know exactly what I'm talking about.) These canvas Dru boots are a great solution. I like their Safari vibe - sort of an intrepid explorer feel. They are evocative of many old world items I'm fond of but can't really pull off - spats, saddle shoes, waders. Ok, maybe not waders.

al dente.

We have not one, but TWO styles of sweet, little porcelain boxes for a first lost tooth. I am enameled with these. Har har.

shhh. redux.

A while ago I told you about these beautiful pussy willow earrings by Stephanie Simek. We now have them in regular shiny, sterling silver, as well as the original dark, oxidized silver. So silvery and pretty.

Lone Wolf

Raise your (very cold) hands if you've lost your favorite pair of gloves and don't want to admit that there's more winter yet and don't want to spend your spring funny money on cold-weather gear. My hands were raised, until I bought myself a pair of these pop-top mittens by Father Panik. Mine are solid black and say "LONE WOLF" and at $24, my spring wardrobe funds are still intact. We've got a variety at Catbird now.

All our ducks in a row

Anything that reminds me of the Crayola tour factory on Sesame Street makes me very happy. Our new shipment of vases does just that- all grouped together next to the real life terrariums, it's our own catcall to spring.

terrariums. from the latin meaning "to procrastinate".

In third grade, when we were learning about our local flora and fauna, we had to make terrariums. Mrs. Ormsby gave us the not-so-generous time frame of one week. I don't exactly know how I thought this would pan out but I chose to ignore the project until the day before when I told my parents about it. And that is how I learned the word "procrastinate", now all too familar to me. Oh wait - maybe it was actually a diorama.

Regardless, look at these terrariums that landed yesterday at the store! Each one is different and if you know what's what, you will get one as a present for someone because they will seriously love you forever and think you are the best present-giver on earth. I know I would.

(limited supply. made by the awesome, and local, amy merrick.)

Children of the Corn

I can't get enough of this totally bizarro new little tray from John Derian that just arrived at Catbird. Whenever I buy trays or boxes, I puzzle over what I'll use them for, and then they magically find the most perfect little home. Truly, trays and boxes can help make our little Brooklyn homes tidy, efficient, cozy, mean little machines. Did I say little???

mais OUI!

Last week I spent the day interviewing people for a weekend post at the store. I met lots of lovelies, one of whom was very French, had great, easy style (is that redundant?) and was wearing a beautiful necklace that she had made that stopped me in my tracks. I picked some up immediately and today she told me that a Very Big Designer (who shall remain nameless) is probably picking them up as well. (There are people who walk this earth and the sun shines on their shoulders no matter where they go. I think Judith may be one of these gilded lilies walking amongst us. She has been in the states for about 15 minutes and seems to have all her canards in a perfect row.)

They are at catbird now and they are so great! Long chains, cool round pendants hand made from vintage French fabrics, each one is different, and all are under $100. (I guarantee they will be much much more at...the other store, which still will remain nameless.)

(Note from later: we sold one within minutes of putting them out.)

let's party.

Our cool and classy new first family, courtesy of La Familia Green. Scoop one up at catbird today.

Stop. Necklace time.

With a name worthy of a Bond girl and a penchant for self-made hammer pants, our new catbird is a cocktail of Brazilian charm and joie de vivre. In honor of Ms. Clarissa Steed, who "loooves necklaces," I present to you Digby and Iona's Kissing Couple and Ass-Grabber necklace. Perfect for a certain someone on a certain day.
