What We're Listening To: Prince

It is a sad day in rock n' roll my friends. Losing another legend like Prince is a little tough to swallow. Luckily, we still have his incredible catalog of music to lift our spirits and have been listening to him all day to commiserate. Here's hoping you get a chance to listen to your favorite Prince songs today, too.

What We're Listening To: Victoria Reed

To say we're surrounded by a sea of talented ladies here at Catbird is quite the understatement. Case in point, our very own Victoria Reed. Victoria has just debuted her first album, Chariot, and it sounds just as beautiful as it looks. The things I personally admire most about her, her supernatural wisdom and sincerity beyond her age, spill through on her folk-inspired songs, leaving you feeling like you just had tea and tarot with someone who just really "gets it." I could go on and on about how talented she is or how her lyrics frequently get stuck in my head, instead you should do yourself a favor and listen below:

Summer Playlist!

Summer is my favorite time of year! The days are longer, the nights are warm, and it's totally acceptable to eat ice cream as often as you like. Whether you're lounging at the beach, chilling by a pool,  barbecuing in the sun, or cruising around town, there's nothing like a perfect summer soundtrack.

I did a quick poll of the birdettes for their favorite summer tunes and compiled them (along with some of my personal favorites) into a playlist. We hope you use it wisely...aka while you're drinking pina coladas and flirting with summer babes.

Pools and palm trees,
Stephanie

What We're Listening To: Courtney Barnett

I can't take credit for discovering this Aussie babe. I overheard our very own lunch lady, Ash, playing Courtney Barnett in the shop and I swooped in demanding (politely of course) to know who it was. Her playful lyrics and chill vibes make me feel like I should be drinking beers in the sunshine with friends while laying in a hammock. Very specific, I know. But take a listen, you'll have visions of sunny buzzy days in no time.

Here's a video for my favorite track, Avant Gardener, where she talks about gardening, asthma attacks, and smoking bongs:

What We're Listening To: Beck

Spring has finally sprung. Buds are blooming, layers are being shed, and it feels like we're all slowly waking up from that nightmare of a winter. Beck's new album Morning Phase seems to mirror that transition: dreamy, a bit somber (ugh, all that residual winter angst!), but sweetened with hopeful melodies. We're digging it. You might, too. Listen along below.

What We're Listening To: Bat For Lashes

Inspired by today's visit to our shop by the lovely and talented Natasha Khan from Bat for Lashes, we're spinning her discography on repeat. We can attest, this lady is a stunner and unbelievably sweet!

Girl-crushing hardcore,

What We're Listening To: Angel Olsen

Everyone seems to be buzzing about Angel Olsen lately, and after listening to her newest album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, I caught myself saying "ahhh, I get it." Her music is this awesome mishmash of sullen folk mixed with 90's grunge that somehow comes across as both fresh and familiar. Also, I feel like she channels Roy Orbison here and there which is definitely an A+ in my book. But enough of me rambling about it. Listen below and see for yourself.

What We're Listening To: Warpaint

I'm in love with Warpaint's new self-titled album. It's equal parts dreamy, moody, dancy, and creepy, which is just my cup of tea. If you're looking for a song to start with, check out "Disco//very." I happily just watched a male customer bop around to it in the store.

What We're Listening To: Mazzy Star

Nothing beats the queen of dream on a chilly November afternoon. That voice, that style, Hope Sandoval makes my list of all-time babes for sure.

Here she is singing "Blue Light" live in 1993. Swoon.

What We're Listening To: Still Corners

Rainy days in Brooklyn take me back to the few times I've had the chance to cross the pond and galavant around the streets of London. All that gloominess can feel dreamy and the dreariness seem sweet with the right soundtrack. London duo Still Corners, in my humble opinion, encompass all those sentiments perfectly with their soothing dream-pop vibes. Check out their album, Strange Pleasures, below. And you can go ahead and blame me if you end up curling up for a peaceful snooze afterward.

Have you heard the new Chelsea Wolfe album? If you haven't, you should. True to her nature, Pain is Beauty is dreamy, dark, and hauntingly beautiful. Get out your tarot deck, light some candles, and listen along below:

What We're Listening To: Neil Young

There's something about stormy weather that makes me want to curl up in my bed, sip some tea, and listen to Neil Young. Seeing as there's no bed or tea at the store, I'm happy to settle for just the listening to Neil part.

You can listen along with us here:

Also, can we all just agree right now that Neil Young has some wicked style? I really want to steal this jacket.

What We're Listening To: Blouse

(Image via Captured Tracks)

September has indeed arrived, and visions of hot cider and oversized sweaters have begun to fill our heads. It's a dreamy, nostalgic time as we transition from summer days at the beach to cozy evenings fireside. The soothing sounds of Portland-based dream-pop band Blouse seem like the perfect soundtrack.

Check out one of my favorite tracks by them below:
